Cashless fares for
Nigeria’s public transport.
A passenger pays a danfo fare without cash. A driver keeps a record of every naira.

The problem
Every journey ends with the same sentence.
“No change.”
The conductor holds up the bus. The passenger pats pockets. Somebody loses a sale and everybody loses time. And at the end of the day the driver carries a day’s work home in cash, with nothing on record that the day happened at all.
- The passenger No receipt, no proof, and a hunt for change at the door of the bus.
- The conductor Fares go uncollected because the change simply is not there.
- The driver Cash on him at night, and an income that exists nowhere on paper.
Why cash is still here
Not for want of trying.
-
PoS terminal
Built for a counter with a queue, not a moving bus. And it asks the driver to buy hardware before he has earned from it.
-
Bank transfer
Needs data, patience and a confirmation screen at the door of a bus, with the conductor waiting.
-
Card reader
Costs money the driver does not have, on a device he cannot charge on the road.
-
A QR code on the wall
Still leaves the passenger and the conductor reconciling by hand what was actually paid.
Every one of them asks the driver to change how the fare is agreed, or to spend before he earns.
The insight
Change the settlement,
not the negotiation.
In a Nigerian bus the fare is agreed out loud: passenger and conductor, in seconds, the way it has always worked. Blueshake does not touch that. It moves the money, and keeps the proof.
The passenger enters the fare they agreed. The terminal takes the payment. The driver keeps every naira of it.
The product
Three parts, one system.
-
01
Passenger app
Find the vehicle, pay the fare already agreed, keep the receipt.
-
02
The terminal in the vehicle
The driver’s screen: ready to take a fare, and every payment of the day.
-
03
Operations console
Staff onboard drivers, approve vehicles, commission terminals and reconcile the money.
These are the real screens, photographed on the demonstration handset.
The part nobody sees
A bus is a bad place for a network.
The terminal carries an encrypted, signed payment envelope from the passenger’s phone and delivers it to the server when a connection returns: passenger offline, terminal offline, or both.
And when the outcome is unknown, it stays pending. It never becomes “paid.” Only the server can confirm money.
Trust
We built the ledger before we chased a single user.
- A double-entry ledger. Every movement balances. Posted history is append-only and cannot be edited. Corrections are made by reversing entries, never by rewriting.
- Idempotency on every payment. A retry, a duplicate message or a reconnected terminal can never pay twice.
- Provider-neutral settlement, with reconciliation and an exception queue, so a provider failure can never quietly change the truth.
- Identity without hoarding it. Driver NIN and a live liveness capture are checked through a licensed partner. We never store the NIN or the biometric; only the outcome, the provider’s reference and a hash.
- NDPA-shaped by design. Raw identity data never reaches our database, our object storage, our logs or our backups.
Evidence
What exists today.
- An end-to-end controlled demonstration. A passenger phone, the in-vehicle terminal and the server completed real payments, including the offline route. 15 September 2026.
- The terminal is real. A native Android terminal, commissioned on hardware, connected live to our controlled API, advertising and ready for the next passenger.
- Engineering that can be audited. Hundreds of automated tests across the ledger, the payment state machine and the terminal protocol; a continuous integration pipeline that is green; an immutable audit trail behind every privileged action.
No public users. No live money. Those gates are deliberate: Blueshake will not move real customer funds before licensing and reconciliation are in place.
Why it matters here
What a labelled Blueshake changes.
- Inclusion, with a record. A driver’s income is invisible today. Blueshake turns it into a verifiable earnings history, the first step towards credit and formal finance.
- Safety. Less cash carried home at night, by the people least able to absorb losing it.
- Formalisation. A transport system that can be measured is one that can be planned, financed and taxed properly.
- Jobs. Onboarding agents, terminal commissioning and fleet support: work that grows with every vehicle added.
- Exportable capability. The same rails serve keke, okada and buses beyond Lagos. The offline relay and ledger engineering is technology Nigeria can export.

The road ahead
From one bus to a national rail.
-
Now
Onboarding and commissioning
Staff onboard a driver, approve the vehicle, commission a terminal and assign it, all through the console, with no scripts and no database edits.
-
Next
The terminal in a working vehicle
A controlled field trial on the handset: real journeys, real passengers, controlled value.
-
Then
A fleet that maintains itself
Health monitoring, signed updates, device replacement and retirement.
-
Finally
Production qualification
Licensing, custody, independent penetration testing, then a public pilot.
Settlement will run on cNGN, the naira-backed rail, with a per-driver balance the driver sees only as naira and a withdrawal. Live money stays switched off until the provider, custody and reconciliation questions are answered in writing.
